The Lunisolar Calendar of the Germanic Peoples

ÁRTALA

The Year Counter

Moon phases, seasonal festivals, leap years and the Twelve Nights – reconstructed from historical sources, free of esoteric embellishment.
Now as an app.

What is Ártala?

"Ártala" (Old Norse for "year counter") is the word the elves use for the moon in the Eddic poem Alvíssmál – because in Germanic heathendom, timekeeping was governed by the moon.

After publishing the Germanic lunisolar calendar as a printed wall calendar under the name "Ártala" from 2017 to 2021, I can finally offer it as an app.

"Reconstructing a lunisolar calendar in book form is a very theoretical affair. With the help of an app like Ártala, something so abstract becomes a tool that allows you to feel your way into the historical qualities of time and, if you wish, to revive them for your own everyday life."

– Andreas E. Zautner, author of Der gebundene Mondkalender der Germanen

Recommended by Eldaring e. V.

Eldaring, the largest Germanic Heathen organisation in the German-speaking world, endorses and cooperates with Ártala. With the signing of a cooperation agreement, the Eldaring board and Ártala have committed to raising mutual public awareness.

In addition, the previously entirely self-funded project has been made more accessible through the organisation's support – resulting in lower prices for all future customers, and particularly so for Eldaring members. Eldaring stands for an open, inclusive, and academically grounded approach to Germanic Heathendom and is a recognised non-profit.

"With calendars we plan the future, but with the lunar calendar we also illuminate a piece of our past on the way to tomorrow. That is the magic of Damian Haller's creation and reconstruction called Ártala."

"Those who discover Germanic Heathendom today almost never encounter the few scientifically documented remnants right away. With the Ártala calendar, having academically grounded knowledge of how the year was truly divided and when each festival was actually celebrated is an invaluable help!"

The Moon as Year Counter

On the history of humankind's oldest calendars

Long before writing, cities or empires existed, humans measured time by the moon. As early as 10,000 years ago, Mesolithic hunters in Scotland (Warren Field) erected a monumental arrangement of twelve pits – a lunisolar calendar.

Those who count by the moon today do not stand at the edge of history, but at its very centre.
